What I Use to Look Less Tired

For a long time, I didn't bother with eye products. I don't usually have particularly bad dark circles unless I'm really ill or tired and I tend not to care much about any of the sorts of "flaws" that are present on just about every person at every age. I also don't really believe a cream could help much with things like eye bags (which are predominantly caused by lifestyle, age and genetics), and generally am happy to just use my normal moisturisers and foundations rather than separate products for eyes. There have, however, definitely been times I would have liked some products I could rely on for a quick fix when a bad night's sleep or a stressful week showed on my face more than I'd like.

I'd tried a few eye creams and a few concealers, but they seemed to either do nothing or cause my make-up to crease on top of them. Apart from occasionally dabbing some ineffective product or another on in the hopes it'd miraculously disguise a night of no sleep, I haven't really bothered with anything designed specifically to be used around eyes.

But all that said, I'm starting to think that maybe I just hadn't been trying the right products to convince me. The thing that piqued my interest in exploring eye products properly was Ishtar Skinlights' Vitamin K cream. I discovered the brand a few months ago (look out for a brand overview post in the next few weeks!) and bought a whole stash of products from them, adding the eye cream to my basket on a whim just before I checked out.

It's the first product I've ever found to make a noticeable difference to my eye area - after a couple of weeks of use, everything started to look a little brighter. It obviously didn't completely get rid of my dark circles but it made me look less tired than I felt, and it seemed to minimise the blueish patches I have in the corners of my eyes. It contains some great ingredients (like peptides to stimulate collagen production and Vitamin K which helps to strengthen the capillaries that cause dark shadows), and it's only £10.50 from their website.

The next one that made me reconsider my views on eye products is the Organic Surge Eye Gel. This is another one I picked up on a total whim - I spotted it in TKMaxx for about a fiver, but it's available from the Organic Surge website for £9.25. I used it a couple of times and wasn't particularly excited by it, but it really came into its own after an incident with a contact lens that left one of my eyes horribly swollen. A little of this straight from the fridge a few times a day helped get things back to normal (probably thanks to the aloe vera and green tea it contains), and now I keep it on hand for any times things start looking puffy.

Finally, the product that totally converted me: The Body Shop's Lightening Touch. This is their answer to YSL's Touhce Éclat - it's a light-diffusing concealer pen that works brilliantly to brighten up the whole eye area. It's incredibly hydrating and light, so it doesn't cause any of the usual problems like caking or creasing I get from concealers, and it has a peachy-pink tone to counteract the blues that tend to come through under the eyes.

It's super subtle so don't expect a concealer that will actually mask much, but it's an excellent one to use if you're after something that makes you look just a bit perkier without appearing "made-up". At £14, it's considerably cheaper than the Touche Éclat and is definitely worth trying.

  2. These sound great, I just use MAC's concealer under the eye but I want to try the Bodyshop Lightening Touch as that looks really good and a lot lighter!

    1. It is fab - as I said, it doesn't do much in terms of actual coverage, it just really corrects the colours :) x

  3. I swear by Bobby Brown Corrector and a Touche Eclat dupe on top of that to hide my dark circles. And I agree, no eye cream will ever get completely rid of them, they are genetic.

    1. I want to try the Bobbi Brown one again actually - a counter lady put some on me a while back and I was quite impressed, but still haven't bought it or tried it again! X

  4. I love the sound of the Ishtar cream! I'm hopeless at remembering to use eye creams as like you, I never really feel like they do much, so I may have to give that one a try! I've actually got a little bit of eczema on my eyelid at the moment so I have been using a Balance Me eye cream to try and calm that down, it does seem to be helping...

    1. I've tried a couple of Balance Me creams and really liked them! I might give that one a go, I have a whole new eye problem lately where I have a little patch of sore skin in the corner of my eye that's been coming and going - I reckon if it can help with eczema, then it can probably help with whatever my thing is! X

  5. Wow the Body shop product did an amazing job at concealing. As someone who finds it quite hard to sleep I already have quite bad under eye circles, my only problem is that a lot of concealers seem to react with my eyes so I'm quite weary of them!

    1. Oh, nightmare! I have fairly sensitive eyes and haven't had any trouble with these - I think Body Shop are pretty good about letting people try things though, so you could pop into a shop and test it out first? X

  7. Although I do take care of my skin, I don't do anything for my under eye area. This post is beginning to make me think I should before my circles get worse. Thanks for this, I'll be checking out those products!

  9. I don't get as much sleep as I should these days and my undereye circles have been yelling at me for that -- yelling at me bold and dark. It's also quite unfortunate that I do not bother with taking care of them at all. Perhaps I should start doing so. The Body Shop lightening pen looks incredible.

  14. I don't really have any recommendations so far as I'm still trying to find a good eye cream myself. I tried a few from Garnier, and an eye cube but I didn't find them that great really. The organic surge eye gel sounds great, I might see if it's in TK Maxx :)
