Review: Lush Empties

I'm a big fan of Lush masks but I'm not actually sure why. Some of their ingredients are known irritants, some ingredients (like egg whites, which I've already expressed my views on) are a bit unnecessary, and to be totally honest I think there are much better masks out there at similar prices - even just a really basic clay mask often performs just as well. But I really love the scents, colours and textures of Lush masks and am going to defiantly keep buying them for ever and always anyway.

Amazingly, despite having been a Lush fan for about fifteen years, this is the first time I've managed to gather five of their black pots to take back in exchange for a free fresh face mask. I've definitely worked my way through tons of masks in the past, but I'm terrible for accidentally chucking them in the bin (actually, I'm just generally terrible for accidentally throwing things away - during my big weekly house-tidying session I gather clutter in one carrier bag to sort later and put rubbish in another - predictably, this has resulted in the wrong bag ending up on a rubbish van several times).

I've had mixed feelings about the products I've used up - a couple were a little disappointing but still, obviously, good enough for me to finish. These were my thoughts:

Smitten Hand Cream
One of the reasons it's taken me a while to get around to washing out the pots ready to take back to Lush is that there was a tiny bit of this left, just one last use that I put off for a ridiculously long time. I've been saving it because this is possibly my favourite Lush product ever and they've bloody discontinued it, the bastards. I picked it up from the Retro collection on lush.com a while back and fell in love with it immediately. It has an amazing almond scent, and did an incredible job of moisturising my hands, nails and cuticles without ever leaving them feeling greasy. I'm super sad to have reached the end of it.

Retread Conditioner
I liked the smell of this one more than I liked the actual product. I feel like I'd actually get on with it a lot better now that my hair is shorter, but when it was long, damaged and dry this just didn't do enough for me. Though it's meant to be used on damaged hair, it didn't do anything to soften or reduce friziness on mine. My hair's in okay condition since having half of it chopped off, but it's still a little dry and I'm tempted to repurchase to see how it fares now that I'm looking for something to moisturise without weighing it down.

Mask of Magnaminty Self Preserving Face Mask
I feel like this one has potential to be super irritating, but I got on okay with it. I erred on the side of caution and only used it in the bath so it didn't ever fully dry on my skin, and I didn't leave it on for as long as I'd usually leave a mask sitting, but it always helped to wake up my skin when it was looking a bit dull and seemed to bring down the redness of any spots I had. It smells like toothpaste, which I actually really liked and I was weirdly delighted by how bright green it was.

This is probably my favourite so far of all the Lush masks I've used. It smells gorgeous, it left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and it didn't cause any irritation (it's quite grainy though, so it needs to be washed off gently rather than scrubbed). It contains honey and glycerin which are both humectants that help to hydrate skin, and a whole load of herbs that help make it smell so good.

God knows why I bought this one. I knew I hated it as soon as I smelled it but was persuaded to try it anyway by a Lush girl (who was so charming that I spent about £30 more than I intended to, which is one of the only times I've been okay with pressure-selling; I loved everything apart from this and she introduced me to some great products). In terms of effectiveness, this stuff was... fine. It got my skin feeling clean and didn't cause any irritation, but it didn't do anything particularly exceptional. I guess if nothing else, at least I've learned that garlic and tea tree is a fragrance combination I never want to smell again.

  2. I have tried very few products from lush for some reason! I don't get to the store too often & when I do, I tend to get a bit overwhelmed by the choice & also the scents! I'll make a not of some of these products for the next time I'm in there though! xx

    1. Yeah, definitely can be a bit overwhelming! I often end up with way more than I need or just give up and go home empty handed! x

  3. Ahh a Lush review! I wish we had a Lush where I live but alas, I'll live through you! I totally agree about Retread it smells amazing but the product itself wasn't anything special.. The smell of cosmetic warrior is unlike anything I have ever smelled before lmao, quite an experience! I really want to try smitten, it sounds heavenly! Thank you for this post dear! xxxxx

    1. Ah no! I remember the dark days when there wasn't a Lush near me, I used to stock up on tons of bath bombs whenever I went to London! x

  4. You are right, the Cosmetic Warrior smells horrible! I managed to finish my pot by telling myself it would help in repelling any vampires that lurked around my house, but I don't think I´ll repurchase.
So far a few hair products have been great (Marilyn, R´n´B), but in general I stick to their bath bombs.

  6. The only thing I've tried from Lush are the bath products but I'm eager to try more from their skincare & haircare ranges. The Brazened Honey Mask sounds like the best one & I think it would also suit my skin well x

  10. I quite like the masks that contain tea tree (although they aren't the prettiest to look at) I also love the Cupcake mask, it makes your face so soft. I'm useless at saving the tubs too...unfortunately I didn't know about their scheme until I had already chucked a few :(

  13. I've only tried their bath bombs and I was not too impressed by them but have read really good things about their masks. It's definitely on my list to try and hopefully I get along better with the face mask than the bath bombs.

  27. I'm in much the same boat, I love their bath products for the scents but don't use any of their products as part of my skincare routine. With that said, the scents get me every time so I've usually always got a mask on the go (seaweed being my go-to Lush mask).
