Two New Favourite Mascaras

Perhaps simply due to the fact I have pretty crap eyelashes (the hairs overlap, they don't hold a curl and they're not very long - thanks, genetics!), I've never found a mascara I properly love. They're Real was fairly nice, and I quite liked Maybelline Illegal Length, but ultimately very few mascaras add length or volume to my eyelashes without causing them to clump so much that I'm just left with about three big fat spider-lashes.

Having tried a load of different mascaras over the years and never being especially impressed, I decided recently that I'm done with mid/high end ones. Even discounting the fact I'd given up hope that anything could work to make my lashes look all long and fluttery, mascara is a product that needs to be thrown away after three months for hygiene reasons, at which point it's often n
owhere near used up yet already going dry! There are some really decent drugstore options around now; what's the point in paying more than double the price for a similar product?

So with that in mind and my Roller Lash (which was good, but not great) starting to dry up, I went to Boots the other day to pick up the Maybelline Lash Sensational everyone's been talking about, and I kinda love it. My lashes look longer, it helps hold a curl and there's no horrible clumping - and it's only £7.99. Fantastic stuff.
The only problem now is that when I shifted things around in my make-up drawers to make room for the new one, I noticed one I'd had hanging around for ages and never tried - and now I've inadvertently discovered a second amazing mascara that's possibly going to completely ruin my resolution not to buy high-end.

I got a free mascara with my BareMinerals starter kit (which turned out to be my stupidest and most expensive make-up purchase to date - I didn't like it when the counter lady put it on me but I was persuaded to buy it anyway and now I can't make it work for me at all, so I have fifty quid's worth of powdery, chalky, cakey crushed minerals that are totally useless to me). I was so disappointed with the products I'd actually paid for that I just sulkily chucked the mascara in the drawer and never looked at it again. I noticed it poking out when I went to put the Lash Sensational away though, and finally decided to have a little play to see if it was any good - and, credit where credit's due, it really bloody is.

Lash Domination might just be the best mascara I've ever used. I've never seen my eyelashes look that thick, that long and still be so well separated before. It comes with an odd wand; super fat with spiralling plastic bristles, which I suspect might be a big factor in the magic it does. I actually almost regret trying it to be honest - I was happy with my decision to eschew premium brand mascaras, and I was definitely happy with the idea of having change from a £20 to spend on a couple of new lipsticks or whatever instead of one mascara. Much as I love Lash Sensational, I think my absolute awe at the performance of Lash Domination means I'm not quite done with expensive mascaras yet after all!

  1. I had a few great high-end ones and a few great drugstore ones, but no holy grail, so I am on the fence about spending the money. Sometimes I will, but most of the time I´ll stick to drugstore to save me the disappointment.

    1. Yup, I think that's the best way - I reckon at the least, I'm going to stick with the miniature versions of the pricier ones unless I know I love them in future!

  9. Oh Lash Domination does look amazing on your lashes!! It's ages since I've actually bought mascara, I've just been going through ones that have come as freebies and in sets and things, but I tend to just buy whatever's on offer...

  10. Both mascaras look great on your lashes! I don't think I've ever tried a high end mascara as I love drugstore ones way too much, Lash Sensational is OK but I love Colossal and Falsies from Maybelline more and Max Factor False Lash effect has to be my fave!

  12. Hi Misia! I thought I'd mention a mascara that works well as a primer for me. Covergirl lash blast length. It's good at getting a light coat & keeping those tiny bastards apart. I end up using other products to gain thickness & faith, but to find my lashes at all it helps! Love your blog! :D

  13. Misia, your lashes look incredible with both the mascaras! I've got pretty tragic eyelashes myself and with eyes that are severely hooded and Asian at the same time, mascara has got to be my go to product, and yet, I still do not own one which works like a charm. I may have to go get the Maybelline Lash Sensational just because it's drugstore, but gosh, if BareMinerals retailed here, I'd definitely try Lash Domination come payday!

  20. So far I've been sticking to the cheapest Maybelline mascara just because it was all I really needed, but lately I've been going outside that. It's great to hear the Lash Domination is working so well for you (and in the pictures your lashes look great!). Too bad I just bought one otherwise I would definitely check it out. 24. I love how lash sensational looks on you! I tried the non waterproof version since it was given to me by a friend, and it just didn't hold a curl. The formula was so nice though in terms of volume and so I'm sad the version I had wasn't really for my lashes. I'm probably going to try out the waterproof version one day though since I absolutely loved the wand.

  25. Totally agree with the lash sensational - it's amazing! The only gripe I have with it is that it is an absolute devil to remove - it's almost like a waterproof formula! x

  27. Ohh, our lashes sounds the same! Mine is short and stick straight too and I adore Lash Domination! I received a sample size and fell in love with it. I think you'll love Givenchy Phenomenon'Eyes, that's my absolute favourite and it hold the curl on my lashes. Lash Sensational was okay but sometimes it's too heavy for my lashes and Roller Lash doesn't give me any volume. :-( #firstworldproblems

    1. So annoying finding a good one, right!? I get really frustrated because a lot of the time when people rave about mascaras, it's because they've got decent lashes to start with! Givenchy sounds like a good shout, I might see if I can get one of their counter ladies to let me try some - thanks for the tip! X

I don't really know how I feel about They're Real - I love the brush for getting little lashes, but I just don't know if the product itself is worth £20 in terms of what it does for me! X

  29. Wow the results from Lash Domination are great! Whilst I do think there are a lot of good drugstore mascaras that work for me, I also love some high end ones, so it's a mixed bunch from me :)

  33. I have to say I don't really like a lot cheaper mascaras as they pong so chemical and irritate my eyes. I'm a fan of Bare minerals though, I use their Flawless Definition which has a tiny brush for small lashes. I've been pondering about Lash domination & your lashes look amazing in the after shot! That's on my list then ;)
