October Favourites 2015

October started with a family party to celebrate my son's fifth birthday, and finished on a similar note with us all gathering again at mother's house on Halloween to eat pumpkin soup and drink way too much wine. The weeks in between have been fairly quiet and relaxed, and his month's been all about keeping things simple and comforting. These are the products I've been loving most:

  • Firstly, I'm thrilled to be getting out my bottle of Jasmin Noir again. I adore this fragrance but I just can't tolerate it in the summer - it's definitely an autumn/winter perfume. With top notes of jasmine and gardenia and a musky liquorice base, it's a perfect evening scent. It's sexy and strong but understated - a "little black dress" kind of fragrance that I've been loving wearing again this month.
  • I'm so happy that it's candle season again. So happy. Much as I believe nice candles can and should be used year round, there's just something wonderfully cosy and comforting about sitting indoors and enjoying the glow and the scent while everything's grey and cold outside. Makers of Wax Goods' Cedarwod and Cassis is my perfect autumn candle; the jar design is uniquely gorgeous, and the scent is fantastic - a homely combination of wood fire, men's cologne and winter berries.
  • As soon as the weather cools down a bit, my skin protests. It starts to look dull and flakey at about the same time the evenings start getting darker, and while I can't bear not to immediately moisturise after a shower at any time of the year, I get serious about it in the winter. Burt's Bees Soothingly Sensitive Body Lotion is an excellent everyday product; when I don't have the time or patience to wait for something heavier to sink in, this lotion works well to keep my skin hydrated all day. The honey scent makes me feel all warm and nostalgic too, I used Burt's Bees Baby Bee products on my son when he was a baby, and this really takes me back
  • It seems like a strange product to get excited about, but I've been weirdly obsessed with the handwash I've got on the go at the moment. After deciding to ban myself from spending ludicrous amounts of money on fancy Neom soaps, I discovered Home & Body Co soaps in TKMaxx and have picked up various different scents from the range. The lavender and mint is my favourite so far; it doesn't dry out my hands, the fragrance is wonderful, and I love the bottle design (although I actually decant it into my bamboo soap dispenser rather than having it on display!) - and £4.99 for 636ml is a price I can't argue with.
  • I've been getting a lot of use out of my Japonesque Precision Eyelash Curler this month. The curve of my eyelids makes most eyelash curlers awkward to use - either the outside corners get left out, or I pinch the skin in the middle. This curler is only about a centimetre and a half wide, which makes it perfect for curling just the outside lashes. Whether you have the problem I do of frequently ending up with a curled middle portion and straight outer lashes, or you just want to be a bit more precise about how and where you're curling, these are definitely worth trying.
  • Finally, a Rimmel pairing - I've been wearing a combination of the Kate Moss lipstick in 03 and the Vinyl Gloss in Snog throughout the past month, and I think I've finally found my perfect nude lip. The lipstick is a little lighter than my natural lip colour, and the lipgloss is slightly darker. They're each lovely used alone, with brilliant finish and longevity, but the two together create a perfect "my lips but better" shade on me.

  5. Great picks! I too love 'Jasmin Noir' - have you tried the 'Mon Jasmin Noir' version in a transparent bottle? It's more suitable for spring, but still lovely - it smells like sweet nougat and white flowers. x Thank you for sharing these lovely picks! x

  6. Ohh I've seen that soap (or one similar) in my local TJ Maxx (here they're TJ instead of TK). Never bought it though, might have to check it out now. Also I love candles and that one looks so cool, love the wooden top.

  7. I've used the Rimmel lipgloss before, but it was in a clear colour and a coral, whereas this shade looks much more my kind of shade :)
